Art Print, 5x7: Chow Chow Recipe Card
Celebrate the end of summer and the garden harvest with this whimsical, hand-drawn letterpress print, inspired by the flavors and traditions of Appalachian cuisine. Originally created for the "CHOW CHOW" festival in Asheville, NC, this unique piece honors a beloved Southern recipe. The CHOW CHOW festival was an independent gathering that brought together chefs, farmers, critics, and food enthusiasts to celebrate the region's rich culinary heritage.
This print captures the essence of Chow Chow, a “kitchen sink” recipe traditionally made at the end of the harvest with whatever is left in the garden. It embodies the spirit of autumn abundance and a commitment to seasonal, intentional living. Perfect for foodies, gardeners, and homesteaders, it’s ideal for those who cherish a connection to their food and land.
Each print is lovingly crafted in my North Carolina studio, nestled in the mountains where my family and I cultivate a small homestead. Using a vintage Vandercook #4 letterpress machine, I print each piece one at a time on 100% cotton paper, adding a soft, tactile quality that enhances its heirloom feel. It’s a nod to the art of hand-making, created with care and devotion.
This art print features hand-drawn illustrations and the following Chow Chow recipe ingredients:
6 green tomatoes
3 onions
4 bell peppers
1/2 cabbage
1/4 cup of salt
3 1/2 cups of vinegar
1 cup of sugar
1 TBS mustard seeds
1 tsp celery seeds
The text and illustrations are printed with a tactile letterpress impression on thick, luxurious cotton paper, making it suitable for framing as unique kitchen or dining room art. Fits any standard 5"x7" frame and makes a thoughtful gift for those who appreciate a slower, more intentional lifestyle.
